Case Study: What to Consider for a Basement and Ramp Grade

Thinking about adding a basement to your development plans or designing an underground car park ramp for a commercial space? It’s not as simple as just digging into the ground! The grade of your basement and ramp plays a crucial role in everything from drainage and accessibility to safety and long-term durability. A poorly planned slope can lead to vehicles scraping, water pooling, and expensive work to fix the grades after construction.  [PC1]

Real-Life Basement Ramp Study

At Quantum Traffic, we had a project where there was a relatively steep curved ramp going down into a basement car park.  The challenge was determining the ramp grades and how they would work for low clearance vehicles.

We also had to ensure a vehicle could manoeuvre from the porte cochère into the basement so vehicles wouldn’t have to drive out of the site just to go down into the basement.

We then got to work on the basement itself: the owner required five parking spots in the basement and space was fairly tight.

Along with the architect, we came up with a detailed plan including specific advice on how to achieve five spaces, requiring sound planning to get done.

If space is at a premium in your development, we're here to help!

Basement Ramp Design

Basements can add incredible value and functionality to a home or commercial space but getting the design right is critical, especially when it comes to the ramp grade - The slope, drainage, and structural integrity of your basement and ramp will determine its long-term success.

If you’re planning a basement project, working with an experienced architect, civil engineer, and traffic engineer is crucial to getting the details right. Whether it’s a sleek underground garage, a compact single basement for townhouses, or a multi-level basement for a large-scale development, investing in good design early in the project will save you from costly problems in the future[PC2] .

Contact the team at Quantum Traffic today, we can provide advice on basement ramp design and guide you on the most efficient way to reach your ideal number of spaces to help your project move forward quickly and efficiently. Call 1300 757 016 or enquire online now.

[PC1]Removed comment on structural strain because that’s far from our area.  Reworded this to refer to the expense of fixing grades later, and keep the ‘rule of three.’

[PC2]Reworded to flow better and ‘rule of three’ again.
